Marzano's book "Classroom Instruction that Works" states on page 10 that effective teaching includes the instructional strategies employed by the teacher, classroom management strategies and a curriculum design. Of these three elements, which do you feel contributes most to your success in the classroom and why? And are there any strategies that you can share with others that would help us to be more effective in the classroom?

I believe that of those three that a good curriculum design, along with the flexibility of accommodating the dynamic of the classroom, contribute the most. As far as strategies are concerned, I believe that what works best for me is to keep students engaged constantly in conversation and also to break boredom by switching from activity to activity from time to time. I teach at NC State, and my students, who are freshmen, have very short attention spans at times. I try to keep them engaged and honestly-- I try to keep them laughing while learning. Laughing is often the best way to keep students engaged while keeping them on topic.
