Dr. Marzano suggests that you ask students to keep track of their effort and achievment. Have you ever used this technique? If so, how did you introduce it to the students and carry it out? Did you consider this method worthwhile?
I have my students list out their achievements at the beginning of the semester when they are thinking about their narrative papers to get ideas. Often they say, "I don't have any/many" or "I'm just not good enough." It's sad that they have this attitude immediately. Once they write out some of their achievements, however, they find the things that they are good at and that they have done well doing. This leads to a building of self esteem in terms of their ability to write well, and that is one of the main goals in my classroom. I want for my students to find confidence in their own writing voices.
